What you may need:

The foundation must be inspected especially carefully, otherwise the greenhouse may simply collapse. Very shallow cracks are covered with epoxy glue. It is simply squeezed over the damage, allowed to dry and the surface is cleaned.

More noticeable cracks are covered with cement mortar:

  1. M400 cement and sand mixed in a ratio of 1: 4, dilute with water until a homogeneous thick pasty mass is achieved.
  2. From the edges of the crack, clean off concrete chips, dust and dirt particles and spray them with water for better "adhesion".
  3. Apply the solution evenly.
  4. When the cement mix slightly "grasps", flatten it, restoring the plane of the foundation.
  5. Cover the damaged area with a damp cloth for 2-3 days so that the cement dries evenly.

Use freshly prepared cement mortar to seal cracks

With extensive damage, proceed as follows:

  1. Detach the greenhouse frame from the foundation, lift it up on the supports or move it.
  2. Clean off dirt, dust, concrete chips with a stiff metal brush.
  3. Increasing the perimeter of the foundation by 5–7 cm on each side and 2–3 cm in height, install a formwork made of boards around.
  4. Fill the formwork with concrete (M250). You can remove the boards in 3-4 days, the foundation will completely dry out in 25-30 days.
  5. Replace the frame.

Sealing holes and cracks

Holes and cracks in polycarbonate are the most common damage. For repairs, you may find it useful:

  • scotch tape or electrical tape;
  • liquid nail glue or silicone plumbing sealant;
  • glue for rubber;
  • alcohol or solvent;
  • small pieces of polycarbonate for patches;
  • knife or scissors;
  • glue brush;
  • sandpaper;
  • hairdryer.

High-quality polycarbonate will last at least five years, low-quality polycarbonate may not survive even the first winter

A temporary solution for small cracks is tape or duct tape. The "patch" will soon come off under the influence of temperature extremes, heat and moisture.

Liquid nails or silicone sealant will help hermetically seal cracks. The initially viscous material hardens over time. The edges of the cracks must be cleaned of dust, shavings, dry the water in the combs with a hairdryer, if any. The surface is degreased with alcohol, glue or sealant is applied on top. As a rule, the container has a dispenser. Or you can use an assembly gun.

It is better to close holes in polycarbonate right away, without resorting to temporary solutions to problems such as adhesive tape and electrical tape

Polycarbonate patches are a suitable solution for small holes. They are applied from the outside and should protrude 2–4 cm beyond the edges of the damage. The edges of the hole and patches are sanded if necessary to remove small chips.

On both surfaces, wiping them with alcohol or solvent, apply rubber glue with a brush, connect and allow to dry. To prevent water from getting into the polycarbonate honeycomb on the patch, it can be pre-glued around the perimeter with a special sealing tape or, when the glue dries, apply a sanitary sealant along the edge.

On curved surfaces, temporarily fix the patch with self-tapping screws:

  1. Apply sealant around the hole.
  2. Apply the cut patch to the damage and screw it on with self-tapping screws.
  3. Wait for the required time, allowing the sealant to dry (indicated in the instructions).
  4. Apply sealant around the patch to ensure a watertight seal.
  5. Unscrew the screws. Fill the remaining holes with sealant too.

The only thing that cannot be done in this case is to try to "fuse" the edges of the cracks. The toxic combustion products of polycarbonate are hazardous to health.

Microorganisms to the rescue!

However, it is better to heal the soil in the greenhouse and in the whole area in a natural way. The first assistant in increasing the beneficial microorganisms in the earth is high-quality compost. In a tomato greenhouse, I usually add it once every 2 years (a bucket per 1 square meter) in the fall for digging, and for peppers and cucumbers - annually.

If there is no compost, after harvesting plant residues, it is possible to spill the soil well with fermented herbal infusion, then loosen it to a depth of 5-7 cm and sow green manure. Our weather is changeable. but my greenhouse always helps me out. It is always warm in it. And if necessary, you can easily ventilate it, since there are opening windows.

The method is this: we cut out the middle of the bottles, with the ends of 1 cm we put both parts one on top of the other, one with the concave side and the other with the convex side, with an awl we pierce the holes on the board, and then we sew it with a needle and a fishing line - we get a canvas from two bottles, we make them as much as we need. We sew together to the required length of the canvas and nail it to the frame or to the slats. And no expensive materials are needed. The method is laborious, but for 5 years now the greenhouse has been pleasing us with harvests.

Now the season is longer

Water enters the pipes through a boiler installed in the house (pumped by a circulation pump). The greenhouse is located at a distance of 3 m from the house, the pipes between them were dug into the ground and insulated.

To use the heat efficiently, the greenhouse itself had to be insulated. Of course, we filled up all the cracks in the frames, but in addition, we additionally covered the greenhouse with heat-insulating film with "pimples".

At first, of course, they feared that such heating would burn up a lot of electricity. But the fears were in vain. We turn on the boiler only in extremely cold weather, at night, and during the day the greenhouse consumes the accumulated heat. And even then we heat the greenhouse only in spring and autumn.

Now our gardening season begins in early spring with seedlings. We begin to receive the first harvest in early June, and the greenhouse gives us the last fruits of our labors in late autumn.

Repair of greenhouse elements

Repairs usually refer to urgent work, if they are not done on time, the damage increases, and the operation of the greenhouse becomes impossible. With timely correction of deficiencies, repair costs can be significantly reduced.

Full or partial replacement of polycarbonate

Partial replacement is performed when individual sections of the polycarbonate are damaged. They are cut with a sharp knife along the lines of the frame, the cuts are insulated with a special tape. A piece is cut out of a new piece of polycarbonate according to the size of the removed damaged area and connected to the existing sheets using a connecting profile.

Complete replacement of polycarbonate may be required in several cases:

  • with clouding and yellowing of sheets, with improper installation or operation, as well as with poor-quality material
  • with faults and cracks of a large area
  • with multiple minor injuries, for example, from severe hail.

With a complete replacement, the polycarbonate sheets are removed, and new ones are attached in their place using conventional technology. In this case, it is better to mount through the existing holes in the frame with self-tapping screws with a larger diameter thread. If this is not possible, all holes in the metal frame are sealed with sealant. Otherwise, moisture will enter them and corrosion will begin.

Note! Yellowing of polycarbonate is possible with improper fastening - with the UV protective layer down. If the transparency of the sheets has decreased slightly at the same time, it is permissible to remove the polycarbonate and fix it correctly. This will stop further cloudiness.

Sealing cracks and punctures

Cracks and small punctures in polycarbonate can be repaired with transparent silicone sealant. To do this, water and dust are removed from the cavities, the edges are cleaned from burrs and the sealant is carefully injected into each hole using an assembly gun.

All damaged polycarbonate honeycombs must be filled with sealant to create sealed chambers. Do not smear excess sealant on the surface of the sheet, it is better to wait until dry and carefully cut them off with a sharp knife.

Large longitudinal cracks can be glued with a special sealing tape on both sides or fastened with a special connecting profile. Transverse cracks are connected in a similar way, having previously sealed the internal cavities.

Blowing out internal cavities from water and dust

When filling the inner honeycomb of polycarbonate with condensate and dust, the transparency decreases by 20-50%, which leads to a decrease in illumination in the greenhouse. This happens when improperly installed without the use of a sealing tape and an end profile.

Compressed air is used to clean the internal cavities - for example, from a car compressor. The sheets are removed or removed from the fasteners at the bottom of the arch, the air stream is directed into each cavity until it is completely blown out.

After cleaning, the ends of the polycarbonate are glued with a perforated sealing tape and an end profile is installed on them. Then the sheets are mounted in place.

Frame repair

Damage to the frame is possible due to severe corrosion or decay, as well as under the influence of the severity of the snow. With a strong deformation, the greenhouse is easier to disassemble and, having bought new elements instead of damaged ones, reassemble. If the deformation of the frame is negligible, it can be repaired.

The bent parts of the metal frame are removed, straightened, clamped in a vice, and then set in place. In this case, a touch-up may be required - when the metal is deformed, the protective coating usually cracks and peels off. In case of severe corrosion, the damaged area is replaced or an additional stiffener is welded above and below the damaged area.

The wooden frame is repaired by replacing damaged parts or reinforcing them with a bar, board or metal strip. After fixing, it is imperative to carry out treatment with an antiseptic.

Note! To avoid similar damage in the future, the weak points of the greenhouse are strengthened with additional supports or jibs, and the foci of corrosion are regularly treated with protective agents.

Foundation repair

The cracks found in the foundation are sealed with cement mortar. To do this, take 1 part of Portland cement grade M400, 4 parts of sand, mix with water to a thick solution. The edges of the cracks are cleaned to a solid base, moistened with water and sealed with a solution. For small cracks, epoxy glue can be used.

Extensive damage to the foundation is repaired as follows.

Step 1. The fixing of the greenhouse to the foundation is unscrewed or loosened. The greenhouse is raised and placed on wooden blocks so as to provide access to the surface of the foundation. Weak and crumbling places in the foundation are removed, the side surface is cleaned of dirt with a metal brush.

Step 2. From boards or shields, formwork is performed around the foundation at a distance of 5-7 cm. The height of the formwork should be slightly higher than the upper plane of the foundation.

Step 3. The space between the formwork and the foundation is poured with concrete of the M250 brand, being careful not to fill the mounting holes. The concrete is punched to remove air bubbles.

Step 4. Drying of concrete (as well as a set of operational strength) occurs within 3-4 weeks, but you can remove the formwork and put the greenhouse on it in 2-3 days. By this time, the initial setting of the concrete will take place.

Note! The greenhouse foundation can be made of timber. When it decays, damaged bars are replaced with new ones, pre-soaked with an antiseptic or used oil.
